The stove connection is, I believe a standard 5/8" connector. You just get regulator with a 5/8" female on one end of the line and a connector to hook up to a standard propane tank on the other. Then adapt that to work with a 1lp canister.You will want to disconnect it when driving just to sidestep the possibility of the seal coming lose. Just a smart thing to do. When in camp, you can leave it connected for a few days. If you do disconnect, screw a cap on the canister as an extra safety. The canisters have a built-in valve, but better safe than sorry. You just want to minimize opportunities to leak gas in an enclosed environment.
Install Propane Tank Under Van
One of the most visited subjects in the propane industry is distance requirements for propane tanks. Distance rules are applicable to propane tanks and their connections in relation to what surrounds them, whether it's a house or another propane tank. Care and consideration of surrounding buildings, driveways, awnings, house or building openings, property lines and more need to be taken into account when placing a propane tank in a legal and safe location.
The distance requirements for propane tank locations are dependent upon the LP Gas tank size as well as whether the installation is an above ground tank or an underground tank. Generally, the majority of tanks fall under a ten foot rule with regard to buildings and houses. The standards and rules differ when locations such as playgrounds, parking lots, railroad tracks or other flammable materials are taken into consideration. Propane companies and professionals will ensure propane tank distance requirements are adhered to when installing a propane tank in any location. The graphic below depicts common residential container distances required by the NFPA.
The point of transfer is defined as "the location where connections and disconnections are are made or where LP-Gas is vented to the atmosphere in the course of transfer operations". The transfer of propane during the filling process results in residual liquid release between the tank fill valve and the hose end connection upon completion of transfer. When the hose is unhooked from the tank, liquid is released into the atmosphere. For this reason, the point of transfer is subject to distance requirements.
Safety relief valves are subject to distance rules for the simple fact that if the relief valve opens allowing propane to vent, the vicinity above and around the relief valve needs to be clear of obstructions and ignition sources. A safety relief valve on an ASME propane tank, if fully activated, will vent propane vertically up and for this reason, propane tanks have to be installed out from under an awning or part of a building overhang.
The picture of the propane tank below illustrates the dangers of unsafe distances regarding relief valve proximity. The arrow labeled 1 is the propane safety relief valve. Arrow number 2 is a hot water heater. Arrow number 3 is the bed of an RV slide-out. If the relief valve were to fully open, the propane stream would be directly underneath the bed of this RV slide-out. If the relief valve opened and propane came in contact with the hot water heater flame (arrow #3), a dangerous situation would present itself immediately. For these reasons, and many others, propane tanks, points of transfer and safety relief valves are subject to distance requirements for the safety of propane consumers.
One great heater placement option that makes use of what is possibly an otherwise unused space is under your passenger seat. However, the install is more troublesome than in the main area of the van. Depending on your layout, propane and/or electrical lines may need to run under the van.
Clearly,these are highly differing opinions! Technically, either location will allowyou to actively operate the tank and your food truck. But during the buildoutprocess, might there be an optimal method of installation?
Thoughthey will accommodate customers wanting either type of installation (verticalor horizontal), some professional specialty truck and trailer buildingcompanies have made vertical installation of tanks their standard buildingprocess. The two main benefits of vertical installation include the following:
Eventhough safety precautions can be specially designed for the protection ofvertical tanks, considered safer by some builders are the horizontallyinstalled tanks. The reasoning is that the unit is protected in the event of anaccident because it is located underneath the truck in a protectivecompartment. This installation still, however, presents risks.
So,how do you make this all important decision? When all else fails, because youwant to pass any and all requirements or codes, check to make sure that theinstallation of your tank conforms with local guidelines.

Note: This is a permanently-mounted tank, built to ASME specifications. In the US, propane (LP gas) tanks are built to the specifications of either the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code or DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations. Basically, the difference between the two is permanent installation (ASME) and transportable use (DOT). DOT capacity is expressed in pounds of water. ASME capacity is expressed in U.S. gallons. DOT tanks must be recertified after 12 years and then at 5-year intervals, ASME tanks do not require recertification. A propane tank separates you from the power grid, giving you the flexibility to live on acreage or in an incorporated area not served by municipal natural gas lines. Not just for cooking, propane can also be used for dryers, water heaters and fireplaces. Expect to pay about $300 to $400 for a small 100-gallon above-ground propane tank, or around $5,600 or more for a large underground tank. The average cost of a propane tank is about $3,000.
An underground propane tank is more aesthetically pleasing because it removes the tank to a location underground. While looks are decidedly improved, the ground directly above an underground propane tank cannot be built on. If you live in an extremely cold environment, you might be required to bury the propane tank.
If the property currently has a propane tank that needs to be removed, costs for this service range from $500 to $1,000, depending on the size of the tank and whether it is above-ground or underground.
Electricity and natural gas rely on lines being run from a central point to your home. Propane, though, is completely flexible. In essence, the power plant is located on your property. A propane tank can be installed anywhere and it does not rely on a centralized distribution point. 2ff7e9595c
